In the early design phases of our Traverse Fattie 29, we recognized that the number of aluminum wheels that had the prowess to both shred rowdy descents and to provide the efficiency required of our Northern California testing grounds' relentless climbs were far and few between. We also came to realize that trail riders expect certain features in a proper, send-it-ready wheelset. And for the price, we found that alloy hit many of these expectations, while also keeping enough jingle-jangle in your wallet for a post-ride beverage. Along with light overall weight, stiffness, and durability, another top priority for the Traverse was ease of use. First off, we got rid of the creaky straight-pull spokes and corrosion-prone alloy nipples. Next up, we landed on 28 J-bend spokes, for front and rear wheels, that are all the same length—making it easy to find replacements if needed. And finally, we engineered a new hub design, with a wider profile and higher flange to aid in overall stiffness. We took the traditional 19- to 23-millimeter standard and moved it out to what we found worked best in testing—a whopping 30mm “Fattie” width. A wide rim does a variety of things for ride performance—it better supports the tire for increased confidence and grip, it affords you the ability to run lower pressures, and it spreads impact out over a larger surface area to reduce the risk of damage. We also added our Zero Bead hook design to the mix, and this ultimately aids in preventing “burps” during hard cornering, while also making tubeless set up quick and easy. After developing what we found to be the perfect alloy trail wheels, we went farther down the perfection path, hand-lacing the rims to our own alloy hubs that allow for the same spoke length throughout the entire wheelset, via 28 DT Swiss Revolution J-Bend spokes and Pro Lock nipples. Inside our hubs, you'll find sealed cartridge bearings and DT Swiss 360 rear internals that'll keep you rolling smoothly for miles. We also wanted to ensure that each wheel was built correctly, so we built them by hand. Each wheelset comes packaged with a SRAM XD-driver and a tubeless valve stem in order to make tubeless set-up a touch easier. Please note that Shimano freehubs are sold separately.
WHAT IT'S FOR, WHY IT'S GREAT From weekend hot laps to World Cup XC finals, the Control Carbon combines the low weight and strength found in our world-beating Control SL rim with the new DT Swiss 350 hubs. An unmatched level of durability, precision, and performance in this new Carbon Control wheelset that is purpose-built to open terrain, from gut-wrenching climbs to tear-inducing descents—a whole new era of riding. A high-performance wheel that excels everywhere from world cup xc races to your favorite weekend trail. The Control Carbon combines the low weight and strength found in our world-beating Control SL rim with the new DT Swiss 350 hubs and spokes. This level of quality, precision and performance has previously been found only on wheels costing twice as much. ASYMMETRY BEGETS SYMMETRY The asymmetric design of the Control rim offers some subtle but important benefits. With the spokes offset to one side of the rim, this allows us to reduce the spoke offset that usually occurs at the hub. In turn, this means we can generate greater bracing angles for the spokes between the hub and rim, while also minimizing the spoke tension differential that often occurs between drive- and non-drive side spokes. The end result is a wheel that is stronger, laterally stiffer, more durable, and in the case of the Control, allows us to utilize the same length spoke throughout the whole wheelset. MINIMUM WEIGHT, MAXIMUM DURABILITY, EASY SERVICEABILITY Striking a no-hassle balance between low weight and low maintenance, we chose DT Swiss 350 Classic hubs (15x110mm thru-axle front, 12x148mm thru-axle rear) as the basis for the Control Carbon wheels. With sealed bearings, a notoriously durable 36-tooth ratchet, and 28 spokes front and rear, dependability is assured. QUALITY THROUGHOUT, FROM HUB TO SPOKE TO NIPPLE TO RIM There is absolutely no point in laying up an awesome rim and pairing it with a quality hub, only to skimp on spokes and nipples. So, keeping strength and dependability foremost in our minds, we opted to hold the Control Carbon wheel together with the best: DT Swiss Competition Race spokes and alloy Pro Lock nipples.
Feel your bike come alive on the open road with the new Alpinist CL II, featuring the lightest, best-handling clincher rims we have ever made, elevated with the performance of a tubeless system. The brand new Alpinist CL II now brings mountain-taming performance slightly closer to earth with a carefully selected build designed to let riders take full advantage of the low rim and spoke mass. The Alpinist CL II utilizes the same rim as the alpinist clx ii. They react to even the slightest increase in power with immediate acceleration and carve the purest lines in the corners, yet they can also handle almost double the impact standards of every certifying body. The result is a 1375-gram tubeless wheelset with an otherworldly ride quality designed for real-world road pressures. The Alpinist CL II utilizes components curated to keep you rolling and rolling fast. The DT Swiss 350 hubs, featuring their star ratchet drive system, are reliable and easy to service, while 24 DT Swiss comprace straight-pull spokes front and rear, laced to the rims with their alloy pro lock nipples, are synonymous with reliability and can be obtained at any bike shop. The reduced rolling resistance of a tubeless setup is undeniable, as are the benefits of improved handling and incredible puncture protection. It took the most extensive and demanding engineering and testing program we've ever undertaken. As a result of this extensive development, the Alpinist CL II features a hooked rim that can handle a huge range of pressures up to 110psi and offers an easier set up and mounting experience than ever. - Rim: Alpinist CLX Carbon Clincher, 700c, Disc Brake, Tubeless - Rim Details: 33mm Depth, 27mm External Width, 21mm Internal Width - Hub: DT Swiss 350 Straightpull Center Lock, Star Ratchet 36t internals (10 degs), 100x12mm & 142x12mm, Shim. Taking the notion of combining flagship performance with workhorse dependability one step further, we're introducing the Terra C. This shares the same hub and spoke architecture as the Terra CL, ensuring ease of service and spoke replacement, should the need arise and is paired with an entirely new rim layup. The rims on the Terra C share the same dimensions and broad range of tire mounting possibilities as the Terra CLX and CL—33mm deep with a 25mm internal width—but are crafted using a new-to-us process known as Resin Transfer Molding. This is an automated process that allows us to very precisely control how resin is introduced to the layup, which in turn ensures maximum strength and material performance. The end result is an incredibly tough set of wheels that you can beat on to hell and back. - Rim: Terra C RTM Carbon Clincher, 700c, Disc Brake, Tubeless Compatible - Rim Details: 32mm Depth, 30mm External Width, 25mm Internal Width; ERD 577mm - Hub: DT Swiss 370 J-bend Center Lock, Ratchet LN 18t internals (20 degs), 100x12mm & 142x12mm, Shim.
